Lead based Paint - Big problem?

Hello, I am doing a rehab and the city required us to do a lead based paint test, which we did. The test came out positive. Does anyone have experience dealing with lead based paint? Is it a large problem? My contractor says it could take 3-4 more weeks to solve the problem and more money (not sure how much). Please advise. Thank you..
