Repairs are double the materials cost... good rule of thumb?

Hi; a rehabber told me that I could get a rough idea of repairs by walking the aisles of home depot to get a feel for material costs, and simply double them to get an idea of the full repair costs. Do you agree with this? Seems like it wouldn't be very accurate at all to me, but I don't know this stuff

I once got a quote from a contractor. he spent about 15 minutes there without any notes. he got back to me for - labor only - of $11k. a lot of this stuff was cosmetic.

i asked him could he get it done in 4 weeks? "yep." will you be averaging about 30 hours a week? "yep."

you gonna do the work by yourself? "yep."

ok, that's $91/hour. how about we switch jobs?
