Why do my drywall seams crack?

Too thick mud? Or what?

sometimes cheap mud can cause problems. I tried to save and be cheap on it before and the mud dried with little craters in it and would crack like you are saying. 
I could be wrong, just a suggestion

Sounds like your using too much compound.  Also, are you mixing it yourself or using pre-mixed?

Yea I would use mesh tape, it's a stronger product. The crack could also be if the drywall is installed wrong and then cracks and cracks. We've had this problem once, when we didn't put enough studs in a header and the heavy 8ft solid core doors would crack it when the door would close

Usually, no tape or the single coat of mud is too thick.  I like the mesh fiberglass style tape, with 3 thin coats of soupy mud.

I got pre-mixed in a bucket. I didn't add any water to it-- maybe I should have?

Is this stuff the same stuff people texture drywall with?

Is drywall texture compound the same as drywall joint compound? Why doesn't texture compound crack when it's laid on thick? (Yes, I'm clueless.)

How so?  We used paper tape like they suggested, mudded, cleaned. Is it because the tape isn't even on either sides?
