Jersey City Investors - Experience w/ permitting 2020?

Hi BP!

I'm looking into a deal that is challenging me to do a bit more work than I have done before (moving the kitchens, changing floor plans, etc).

Of course this sort of work will require permits from the city, gas/electric/plumbing inspections etc. Does anyone have insight on JC inspections/permitting? Is the city really backed up now? Are they generally quick? any other insights from your experience?

Trying to gauge what the holding time on this will look like. And perhaps things to keep an eye out for to stay on track :).

I found the process process to be fairly simple and straightforward. I’m not sure if covid changed things . Permits and inspections are easy to book . It’s much easier compared to NYC.

A good expeditor could also make your life easier . DM me if need any help . I’ve put together a great team in Jersey Since I started working there in 2018 .

Hi there,

I found the Jersey City departments very helpful and informative when I called.

COVID messed up my plans so I didn’t go through with the permitting process yet.

I would call them with short clear bullet point description of what you are doing.

They will explain the steps to you.

Then ask roughly how long a permit similar to yours is generally taking at the moment if there are no issues.

I can tell you that they guarantee you an approval or denial within 20 business days from the time they put it into the system.

The steps that lead up to that are few and somewhat reliant on your doing things right as much as Jersey City.

You could also hire an expediter.
