Books can never replace experience, but are there any you can highly recommend?

Actually there are several books, but prefer the consolidated King James version. If you let that guide you first, you'll be fine with any guru book. ;)

Betty Crocker Cookbook. She's got the best recipes. I would literally die if I didn't have that book.

For real estate, I like too many to list. It is all about building the library. I think my best books are seminar manuals (3 ring binder style) from some of the old skool real estate guys that actually stand in front of the room and teach. I'm talking about the guys who were buying and selling back in the 70s. Not all these get rich quick idiots flapping their lips these days. Just spent the weekend with Jimmy Napier and that manual will definitely be going into my creative financing section.

I've read probably close to 40 books on Real Estate Investing.  There was a man named Bob Bruss who used to read 52 new real estate books a year, and then publish his pick of the top ten that year.  You may still be able to find his lists online. He died a few years back.
  My favorites are:
Rich Dad, Poor Dad and the 3 sequals (also the game is great)
Buy,Rent and Sell by Robert Irwin
5 Magic Paths to making a fortune in RE by James Lumley
I liked Andy Heller's philosophy of doing RE as well.
