How to make google only link to my home page

Question

Hi folks,

I'm hoping a web savvy person can help me here. I'm pretty sure there's a way to do this. My website is starting to get ranked but google is linking to one of my secondary pages rather than my home page.

Isn't there a way I can tell the search engines that all my secondary pages on my site should be linking to my home page in the search engine results pages?

Interesting, I was just playing around in the godaddy site builder and found this. All my pages were set to 0.0 so I set my homepage as 1.0

Priority tells search engines how important a page is relative to the other pages on your site. Changing priority does not affect how often a page is crawled by search engines. Priority can be a number between 0.1 and 1.0 with 0.1 being the lowest and 1.0 being the highest. Your most important page (likely your Home page) will have a very high priority (1.0).

I also added some key words to my homepage and changed the title of my home page

I know you can tell Google not to index certain pages. But that won't help the home page only keep the other page from showing up.

I am not sure you want to fix this. It is good to have your other pages show up. That fact that an inside page ranks high helps the home page ranking.

It will depend on the search term.  Lets say you have a website is about all real estate investing but you have a page specifically about land lording. It is normal for the page on land lording to show up ahead of the home page if someone is searching for land lording.

One thing you can do is make sure your home page is targeted for the keywords you want. (keywords = search terms~). If you know how to do it make sure your meta data is correct. If you use wordpress there are plugins for this.

Also make sure you are using your keywords frequently. It helps if Headings, titles etc.  use the keywords.

Lastly there are sites that will analyze your site to tell you how search engine friendly they are. One was Website Grader but I think that is defunct now. Good luck - Ned

There are a number of ways you can tell Google (and others) how to index your web site.

#1 - robots.txt - this is a file that sits in the root directory of your website,  It tells search engines what you want them to index.  You can tell google to ignore certain pages if you don't want them in the index.   Google "robots.txt" for details on how it works.

#2 - Webmaster Tools - Both Google and Microsoft have a free control panel that will give you details about how your site is being indexed, what search queries it is showing up for, what sites link to you, and report on any errors with your site.  Google "webmaster tools" to claim your domain and view the reports.

#3 - Redirects - If you move pages around on your website, you'll want to setup a 301 redirect so that google and others know the page has moved,   The method varies depending on your web server or host.  Google "301 redirect" and the name of your hosting company or web server for instructions.

Hey David, the crawlers will pull from all pages, so I honestly don't think there is a way. 
If your secondary pages are being ranked, then the best thing to do is make sure you have plenty of links on the secondary page to the home page.
