Investing in the Hampton Roads area for Newbies

My wife and I are new to real estate investing and are looking to purchase our first deal in the Hampton Roads, VA area. I'm active duty Navy and currently stationed in Norfolk. Being new, we have a lot of questions and would love to connect with investors in the area.

We're wanting to house hack a duplex or triplex and take advantage of the VA loan benefits, but wouldn't mind doing a SFR as well. We already have a SFR that is currently our primary residence that we are considering renting (if the numbers work out).

Any tips or advice on the market outlook for investors, areas to stay area from, etc. is very welcomed! Thanks for your help in advance!
