Proper conditions for rentals?

I keep reading that I need to make sure my property has the proper conditions to be rented before I lease it to someone, but what does that actually mean? Do you guys have a checklist I can review beforehand? I know windows can't be broken or toilets need to flush, but I am confused on the details. Like, do I always need to paint before leasing?

At the very least, it means the property meets local requirements and is ready for someone to move in right away without needing to fix anything major. Think of it as meeting both legal standards and basic tenant expectations. So if you are unsure whether your unit is truly “rent ready,” getting a second opinion from a local property manager is probably one of the most practical and reliable ways to move forward.
