Choosing a Direct Mail service?

Question

Hello BP family,

Our business is ready to start a direct mail campaign, I don't want to overpay. Any suggestions of a few companies that your using?

Not sure why anyone would disagree with price shopping. unless they owned a company with high prices and spend a lot of money marketing on podcasts and passes on those costs to their customers *laughs

I do agree that you definitely need to work with a company you are comfortable with that has quality products that will get you a good response. That should be a no brainer.

We launched our first DM campaign in January 2017. We targeted 2300 houses within 30 minutes from us. Our goal was to send out the same letter to these 2300 homes once a month for 6 months. We got the letters printed in black and white at a local printing company, we found #10 envelopes online for a good price, we also bough a bulk mail stamp from our post office, which cost us approx. $400 but when mailing locally it reduces the cost of the stamp to .19c.  We then stamps and labelled each envelope, folded each letter, then stuffed and sealed them all. It did take us some time but between myself, my wife, our kids and my parents we got them done. If your willing to put in the time it's definitely worth it. I receive an average of 10-15 call each month. Some people calling to have me stop sending them letters, especially after the receive the 5th and 6th letter.  We usually view 3-5 properties a month in results of the letters. We have purchased 2 properties so far this year from the letters and we have referred 5 to local realtors for referrals because the houses were not best suited for us. Our projected profit on the 2 flips we have from these letters definitely pays for the 6 month trial and we have decided to continue with the DM and even expanding our area.

The best advice I received when I was planning our DM was "be persistent and consistent"  "keep sending letters until the owner calls you to sell your house or tell you stop sending letters"

@Justin Silverio & @Claire Trammell both make really good points, @ParShaun Taplin. You can find a lot of solid, reputable companies online who will do a great job and print at a fair cost.

Use the forums to find out some initial costs. For instance, sending out a 4 x 6 postcard bulk mail should run you between .24-.29 per piece on the postage alone.

It will also depend upon what type of marketing you want to send. Postcards, letters, hand-written letters? Some places are better than others when it comes to what type of printing they do.

@Jorge Contreras -- You are sending every door direct mail for .135 per piece? Does that include postage? How are you getting that price? I ask because USPS charges .177 per piece and .155 for BMEU mailing.

I have looked into yellow letter companies for direct mail and the cost of doing it myself and found that its much cheaper to send out a direct mail campaign via the post office than any other method. At my location I sent out 3700k+ letters for $500 although it is every door on that route but still covered all the homes I wanted to hit vs. me sending out 500 letters myself to the houses I want to hit, so its more beneficial to me to send them all out as it can possibly give me a lead otherwise I would not have gotten.

Secondly, I'm with @Justin Silverio on this one. I would add that a quick search in the BP search bar will yield a number of companies. We aren't allowed to self advertise on here, however, that is good news for you. There are a ton of forum discussions that talk about our pros and cons.

I completely disagree with @Ray Lai.  Most DM companies have very competitive rates now.  My recommendation is to find a company that you feel comfortable with and offers quality, effective products.

Just don't go by google search results or you'll end up overpaying. A lot of BP users just went with the highest search results and overpay because they don't want to take the risk of switching to lower cost providers that have good service.
