Transunion Powered by Asurint Tenant Screening Is Garbage - Avoid It!

Most of my rentals are in Pennsylvania, where I use the local Apartment Association for running rental applications and they do a great job.

For my multi-family in Missouri I use (or should I say used) Transunion Powered by Asurint.

On the most recent check, I first ran one of the potential tenants' names manually in the Missouri Case.net and saw she had two criminal infractions - one in 2024 and the other in January of 2026.

And so after logging into Transunion's Mysmartmove website and going over the potential tenants' criminal background portion of her tenant screening I was dismayed to discover in their report that Transunion Powered by Asurint claimed the potential tenant had 'No Reportable Records' in The Criminal and Public Records section.

I called the Transunion Customer Service number to ask them why this was and the guy I spoke with was useless. He claimed the criminal search was nationwide and when I asked him how they found zilch while I checked the Case.net and found two infractions he sputtered and gave answers that were useless.

He gave me the customer service phone number to Asurint claiming "they're the ones who do the criminal checks". I called Asurint and they're currently closed however I will be calling them tomorrow.

So now you can see why I think Transunion Powered by Asurint is garbage.

Had I trusted Transunion's service without doing my own legwork I would be approving a potential tenant with a concerning criminal charge.

I do not trust Transunion Powered by Asurint and in the future I will be finding another company to perform my Missouri credit/criminal checks.

Replied

We always do our own court landlord-tenant lookups.

Haven't found a reliable background service.

FYI: one of the big challenges is the reporting lag time. It can take a few months before a landlord-tenant case is reported by the bureaus:(
