How effective is Google Voice?

Question

Does anyone use Google Voice?  Can anyone provide an opinion?

Is it just me or is the initial connect message they have when you call the #, "Google Voice is attempting to connect you to  ___  ____ (name)" a bit cheesy/non-professional?

I do want to answer my calls/leads, but I'm not about to post my cell phone all over the place for everyone to see.

I use Google Voice and love it. It's great to have a number to broadcast that isn't your personal number. One really nice feature is that you can listen to your caller as they are leaving a voicemail message and, if you want to, you press a button and can speak to them. I also like the fact that I can use my Blackberry to make calls that show my GV number. You have to download the app to get this capability.

As for the announcement you mentioned, you can turn that off in the settings.

I am sure it can be, but I highly doubt anyone would go through all that trouble. They would probably have to get a court order before google handed out any info.

My only problem with GV was the voicemail part. I am cool with the fact that it sends me a text of the voicemail from GV, however somehow people that call my direct line, their voicemails were coming accross my text when I didn't want them to. Still don't know why.

I'll offer a different opinion. I signed up a few weeks ago and set the service to forward to my cell phone. I hear the other party just fine but have heard that my voice is choppy and inconsistent. I stopped using it immediately.

It still won't allow me several numbers on the same line.

If I forward a second number to my cell, it disconnects the original.

Are you using extensions somehow?

Voice Settings > 'Calls' tab > Call Screening OFF (Directly connects calls when phones are answered)

I love Google Voice.  We use it on all of our bandit signs.  It's very effective

I added the same "office" number to all of my google voice numbers in "settings."  I had no trouble forwarding all of my numbers to this same "office number."  I have my GV number show as the id number when the call is forwarded, so I know which of my GV numbers is forwarding the call.   So far, this is working fine.

And now that GV allows you to make outgoing calls directly from a computer and uses your GV number for the caller ID it's going to work even better :-)  I think Google Voice is gonna give Skype a run for its money.
