Water intrusion in basement

Rex Li
Posted

Hey all,

Today I noticed a bit of standing water in the basement of my property, in the laundry area. However, about 10 feet away, not near the laundry, I also noticed some moisture underneath some of the vinyl flooring. You could hear the squish when you press down on it. This leads me to believe it's not related to the washer. I had been out of town for about a week but I know Chicago received some rain over the last few days, so I'm concerned about water intrusion coming from the outside. I noticed the foundation immediately outside the laundry area is showing some deterioration.

My question is - what are the next steps? Should I just keep an eye on it or contact a professional asap? What type of service/contractor do I need to trace the source?

@Rex Li I would first if you are able pull up the vinyl flooring, install a dehumidifier/fan to start drying out everything. Mold/mildew can start to form quickly if you don't get it dried out.

Then I would call a local "wet basement specialist" and have them take a look, could be a variety of different things if its related to the rains, then should be able to point you in the right direction and give you a couple options.
