Insurance Claims - things to consider when filing a claim

How do you guys handle insurance claims? Had a really bad hail storm that's starting to cause problems. I've been putting off filing a claim, but feel like I need to now.... can't keep chasing around these leaks with temporary repairs. What are some things I should except/ look out for in this process? Any tips and tricks are greatly appreciated
