I stopped trusting my gut on when to replace things
For years I made repair vs replace decisions by feel. Water heater's making noise, HVAC feels sluggish, I'd guess whether it had another year in it or not.
The problem with gut feel is it's usually optimistic. Nobody wants to spend money on something that's still technically working, so the bias always leans toward "it'll probably be fine," right up until it isn't.
What changed things for me was replacing the gut check with a simple reference point, how old is this thing relative to how long these things usually last. It sounds almost too simple, but it took the emotional guesswork out of it completely. A 16 year old water heater doesn't get the benefit of the doubt anymore, age plus typical lifespan makes the call for me instead of my mood that day.
Anyone else make this switch, from feel to actual data points? Curious what finally pushed you to change how you decide.
