Are these good areas for airbnbs in Michigan?

Hi there,

I am a first time home buyer and looking for some input on if certain areas are good for airbnbs. I'm looking at two houses in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One is in Gwinn, Michigan, 49841. The other is in Alanson, Michigan, 49706. I'm looking to find out if these areas are good places for short term rentals in terms of how safe it is, if short term rentals allowed in this area, and if the areas will be in demand for short-term stays.

Hey @Renata Sakhnovsky, I’d probably agree with @Derek Larson on this one. I live in Gwinn (technically out in KI Sawyer), and it’s probably possible, but you might have better luck elsewhere that’s closer to something. It’s a bit of a drive to most places for being in Gwinn, unless you’re trying to cater to snowmobilers in the winter (there’s a major snowmobile trail just north of Gwinn), hunters in the fall, and possibly lake people like Derek said. As for other areas, Marquette city has a 3+ year long waiting list for getting a STR license, so get your name on the list now if you’d ever like to try Marquette in the future.  I’m hearing Munising is pretty good for STR’s and the city is friendly in terms of laws. I’m happy to chat more if needed.

I am not familiar with Alanson.  But Gwinn is just outside of Marquette.  Being from the UP and familiar with that area.  It is just so far from everywhere.  But I believe you can figure it out.  Winter would take some creativity- but I imagine is doable with mid term stays at the hospital or get a couple bookings from hunters or snowmobilers.  Is it on a lake to attract the summer travelers?  Prices are probably going to be cheaper but the rents are going to be less as well.  Everything is a numbers and personal goals game.   Good luck.

There are tools available online that show STR activity in areas. Suggest you rely on those and not advice here.

I'm not personally familiar with the area, but I suggest CrimeGrade, Neighbordhood Scout, and searching "top/best things to do/attractions/destinations/places to see" in Michigan or that area to see if there's potential for tourism/STR :) you could also check out if there's universities for student housing or hospitals for MTRs.
