Demographics and Crime rate tool???

I'm looking purchase out of my area. I am having difficulty finding good and free data to learn about the demographics and crime rate in the area I'm looking to purchase. Any ideas?

@Travis Mullenix - I don't find the info in neighborhood scout is able to help me make decisions on if I would invest in a location. I tried it too.
