Newbie looking to become house hacker as first time home buyer.

Hi community,

I'm looking into getting my first property as first time home buyer by house hacking. Im in NYC but for some reason I'm not interested in doing this here. I'm looking for 3-4 multifamily homes in Waterbury, CT or other towns (I'm open to recommendations based on your expertise) or other near by states. As for now, I've been analyzing properties in that area. Which nearby markets you recommend? how would you do it now days if you were starting like me? What factors should I consider?

Also, I have very little money to non, not great income and considering going FHA, etc with applying to local down payment assistance programs. In general, I'd love to hear your recommendations, tips, hacks, etc. I truly appreciate your input.

Hey @Jofre Olivero, I’ve been where you are, and honestly, the best move is to find a place with separate meters so you aren't stuck paying for everyone’s heat in the winter. From my experience, it’s way easier to get approved for a duplex when you’re starting out because the banks are a lot less picky about the math than they are with 3 or 4-unit buildings. I'd recommend looking for a local "silent second" mortgage or a down payment grant; it’s basically free money for staying put, which is perfect since you’re living there anyway.
