Rental Deposit Return

I bought a rental house last year.. It came with a tenant in place, and the lease is up at the end of the month. During negotiations of the purchase, I inquired about the deposit. The seller’s agent said that the deposit was spent on repairs. Fast forward to a week ago. The tenant is asking for the deposit back when she moves out. She stated the deposit was never spent on anything. Which may be true because the previous owner was pretty shady. So, who is screwed here?? Am I required to pay? Does she have to go after the previous owner/landlord? Thanks!
