Do you request applications prior to showing your rentals?

I have a lot of requests for showings on a rental I just listed. Should I be getting applications completed by each prospective tenant prior to showing everyone the property? What's the best way to initially screen these folks so I'm not wasting time showing the property to folks I wouldn't rent to?

I try to screen each prospective tenant over the phone by asking a few questions to see if they meet my basic requirements prior to showing them the rental. Once they see the rental and are interested, I have them fill out an application. Overall, this approach has worked for me.
