Northwest Indiana, Buying from a wholesaler?

I am rarely new to the real estate business and I am currently looking to purchase my first SFR property somewhere in Northwest Indiana. I have heard mixed reviews on purchasing from wholesalers. I know a guy who wholesale houses and I personally wouldn't buy a house from him. Anyone have preferred wholesalers they buy from in the Region? Or other suggestions in finding the homes? Got to start somewhere any advice is helpful. Thank you
