Should I raise Rent after puchasing tenant occupied properties

I am in the process of closing on two properties. Current rent is well below market value due to seller having a lot of free and clear properties so any cash was a bonus for him.  It my understanding that he has never had a formal lease so eveyone is month to month. I plan on raising rent at least by 50$. Is that too much or should I gradually increase overtime. Property will cashflow at normal rental rate.
