EMD? who pays it? any advice is appreciated!

I am new and about to close my first deal and I had a buyer tell me that the EMD was between me and the seller to ensure we had a deal. Is that true? I was always told that the EMD is to be paid by the buyer. Any advice on the EMD, who opens escrow etc.. that part of the closing part still confuses me! Thank you!
