I’ve got bees! Is this on me or tenant ?

Question

I have a pretty solid size bee hive on a palm tree out front of my rental. I do have an amendment the tenants signed that pest control is on them. However I do feel like crappy if it ends up costing them money. It wasn’t a result of them being dirty or anything. Thoughts?

Cover it yourself and make sure it's taken care of correctly.  Honestly, while all of my leases say pest control is on the tenants, I generally take care of the issues anyway.  I cannot tell you how many times I've had it where I wished I had just handled the problem myself and paid the $75 as opposed to letting the knuckleheads handle it themselves.  Year ago, I got a house back and it was so infested with roaches, it took weeks of treatment, delayed showings, and resulted in a fried control board on the stove.   I'd have taken care of it myself if I had known.  Penny wise and pound foolish and all that.

@Beau Pearson if they are really Bees as opposed to yellow jackets call a bee keeper he/she may come out and remove the hive.

@Dennis M. If they are honeybees please don’t take this advice.  Call a qualified beekeeper to remove them.

There's usually a local beekeeper who will come and remove a swarm for free.  Google your area and beekeeping and the local society will pop up for contact info.  It may even be a swarm from a beekeeper close by who would love to come get his bees back.  This time of year I actually see these posts on Nextdoor, asking if anyone sees a swarm in x neighborhood to please contact them and they'll come get it.

It's not roaches, the tenant didn't bring them from their prior house.  Take care of it.

I highly recommend you handle pest control issues whether they're tenant caused or not. Something like bees I would have the owner pay for, the tenant didn't cause that.

If it is me I handle the bees, also they may not technically qualify as pests.  I'd put a call into a beekeeper and see if they'll take them for free instead of calling an exterminator.

What ??Are you trying to kill these things or make honey and have tea and crumpets with them ? Yeah Call a beekeeper lol I’ll get right on that !  . Look Bro..  Wasp and bee spray is 3$ at Home Depot . Drive over there Wait till evening soak the hive down with spray . All those bees will die or fly off ..Problem solved . No notices no lease addendum or pest control bills required . Just kill em till there dead !
