Fireplace/Chimney Inspection if Not Going to Use?

Greetings,

I recently bought a 1976 duplex with wood burning fireplaces. I haven't had the fireplaces/chimney inspected I and plan to seal off the fireplaces. Do you see any reason why I should have them inspected if I plan on sealing them off?

For $200-300, it's money well-spent. You'll either come away with knowledge about a repair that may be needed or with peace of mind that the fireplace is in working order should you later decide to offer it as an amenity.

Call the City Building Inspector and ask them. I don't know why you would need a permit to close a chimney, but I've seen dumber things.

@Nathan G.  Much thanks. I am told by my PM that to have the chimney sealed off I need to have it done by someone certified to work on fireplaces in order to have it up to code. This is news to me, but I want it done right. Do you know anything about this? Property is in Iowa.

Seal them off top and bottom so nothing can fly/fall into them. Find some ideas for making them decorative.

I’d have them looked at. There could be all kinds of fire risks in there (think dryer vents full of lint that can still cause a fire even if sealed off), partial collapses, cracks, and other evils. Won’t cost you much to have them looked at, will give you a piece of mind and a document from a professional for an insurance company should something happen X years down the road
