Is water heater on a gas line?

Question

The water heater is turned off (no light on the dial - used to be green) and there's no hot water in the unit. Circuit breakers are fine. Is it because the gas connection was turned off and this heater needs gas to operate? Thank you.

Which gas connection was turned off?  Because in the picture, it looks like the valve is ON (Brown knob on the right end of the yellow flex line).  The pilot is most likely behind that panel (the one on the bottom, with the bulge in the middle).  The panel should come off easily.  There are youtube videos for this.

It might be wise to have a plumber come in and check it out .

There are some small parts like an  ignitor that can go bad and cause it to go out even if it's re-lit.

Yes, that yellow flex line is the gas supply to the heater. You need to restart the gas and then light the pilot light on the heater. Usually there is a dial that has a 'pilot' spot on it and then you push the ignitor until the burner lights.

Thank you for your reply Seo. The gas connection to the property was turned off little while ago. The property was unoccupied so the water heater continued to run for a while possibly using (remaining) gas in the line is my guess. To start it, will need to get the utility gas service turned on and then perhaps get a plumber out to start if and checkout everything.

It looks like it is a gas water heater but if you're still not sure, you can always check the model number in a google search. That will tell you 100%. It doesn't look too old. You can check the age via the serial number as well
