My Thoughts On BPCON2026

My Thoughts On BPCON2026

Flying home from my inaugural trip to BiggerPockets annual conference, I wanted to jot down a few thoughts on the experience for anyone considering attending in the future.

Lonely, but not alone

Whether you are a real estate investor, agent or loan officer, entrepreneurship can be isolating. What I was reminded of over the 3 day event is that there are people all over the country facing and overcoming the exact same challenges you are. In some areas of life, one man’s victory means another man’s defeat, and participants act accordingly. In real estate however, people (even competitors) want to help. There were many helpers amongst the attendees.

Bigger is not better. Better is better

When meeting fellow investors for the first time it’s easy to default into the cliché “and how many X do you own?”, as if that’s the metric to determine success. In reality, building a small portfolio of high quality, well performing assets can be every bit as powerful as large scale operators in less desirable segments of the market. There is no right or wrong answer, and there will be people sitting near you that can prove it.

You’re never too late, or early

Within the same day I chatted with a kid in his early twenties (shout out Rory) just starting house hacking his first duplex along with someone nearing retirement seeking their first deal for additional income. One was in Ohio, the other Arizona. Regardless of age and location, people are finding ways to become successful. Surrounding yourself with these types of individuals can only lead to good things.

Take away

Great experience. BP put on a great event. I found it to be worth the cost, and fully anticipate attending in 2027. Hope to connect with you there. -Steve

This was my first conference. I thoroughly enjoyed it and enjoyed meeting people who were just getting started, who I could give advice to, as well as those with significant experience that we could share war stories and ideas over. The pricing strategy for next year actually does not bother me because more experienced investors can pay more than the newbies. Are those with fewer doors. Hopefully, people are honest in how many doors they own.

The one comment I have regarding the meetups and the apps is that I think there were too many attendee gatherings- It was very difficult to navigate the app in some instances because there were so many other meetups outside of the speakers that I lost track of. Also my first time really using Whova app so some user error as well.

I really like the amount of networking time they had, as well as tables couches and chairs around the sponsors to allow people to sit and converse

One last comment is that I truly enjoyed the content about not being a get-rich-quick theme, which you see at so many events to make those just getting started feel like it is easy. Those who have been in real estate through different markets know it is not easy. It is difficult and challenging, and I appreciate the honesty of that.

My 5th BPCon. I always leave motivated and feeling generous on the helping front at departure. I have enjoyed every BPCon.

    Some of my thoughts

    • there have never been higher percentage of women at BPCon. Not sure if this was happenstance or concerted effort by BP. Regardless it was nice.

    • 2027 location of Denver got barely better reaction than when 2026 Orlando when announced. When Orlando was announced, I was one of those not thrilled about the quick return. While Denver was not near the top of my list of locations, I am excited about Denver.

    • Not thrilled at BPCon 2027 price being by number of doors. I know BP wants experienced investors to attend, but that is not reflected in the pricing strategy for BPCon 2027. I question if everyone will register as beginners lol.

    • The Whova meet ups continue to gain in value. There were multiple times that selecting between a session and a meet up was not an easy decision. I held my own meet up and attendance size was exactly where I wanted it.

    • I liked universal studios of bp2023 better than last night’s party.

    • The common theme of slow or what is enough does not match my view (and I almost always agree with Dave Meyer but RE as a slow investment implies a lot of work over a long period to obtain hopefully good return, no thanks). The number of sessions suggesting RE is good option without leverage was troubling. I expect to recover my RE investment in less than 4 years. If it cannot, I question if RE is the best investment option available. Holding for the long haul to achieve profits has a risk that presenters seemed to not recognize and that is anything can happen and the longer the duration the more likely something adverse to investing happens. I saw few sessions dedicated to quick returns excluding flipping. Was there any brrrr session? In my market brrrr is on hiatus, but I suspect it can still work in certain markets. There are other options for accelerated returns.

    • Second year in a row with a lot of the venders being lenders. I think there were noticeably less lenders than last year, but it seemed half the venders were lenders.

    • Special thanks to Alex and Eric. I felt very valued.

I expect to attend BPCon 2027 in Denver. I hope to see a good turn out.

    Best wishes

if its in Denver I may go and do a combo bring my boat and fish some of the great lakes in the rockies between vegas and there. a few of them are just West of the springs although they had to drain one because of the drought.. that sounds like a great tofer for me.

PS that whova app for me is near impossbile to figure out .. and it really is the key .  the small meet ups to me are far more important that the large presentations .. at least at this stage of my RE career.

@Jay Hinrichs we plan on fixing a lot of the ux issues we see with the Whova app for 2027. Stay tuned.

For all others comments, great feedback. Keep it coming.

its just me.. I am no good at that stuff. it made the vegas one I went to very poor experience as I could never find anyone etc.. although I enjoyed just hanging around the vendor room and chit chatting. But I live in Vegas had I paid to fly all the way out there and had the same experience I would not have been very thrilled and would have thought it a total waste of my time. Again though this is JUST ME and my dislike of apps and all that stuff we are suppose to do on the phone.. I use the phone to talk .. Not set appointments.. :)

@Jay Hinrichs haha, well maybe but we’d like to provide a sleeker experience between the content happening on Whova and within biggerpockets. Events are a central part of our identity and we are looking to support them more natively.

And I very much enjoyed meeting folks that we converse with on here like the man, the myth, the legend...Chris Seveney. I was only there for 6 hours, but with I had extended. I enjoyed our chat.

@Doug Smith It was nice meeting you at the breakfast. I told my wife jokingly that much of the conversation was about Eric because one of the breakfast attendees had cyber stalked Eric. Knew where he lived, went to school, had worked. She laughed. But Eric’s stories were interesting/entertaining.

It was a pleasure meeting up and placing person with the posts.

      @Chris Seveney

I used the Whova app last BPCon (in Yucatán they used a different app) without ever noticing the thread that was the calendar thread.   Did you see that thread?   It is like the 3rd thread down.  Without that thread it is very difficult to have any organization on the attendee meetups.   That thread makes it possible.  I ask because abuse if that thread was present last year, and I suspect it was, I did not notice it and found the attendee meet ups near impossible to keep track of.

      Maybe we meet next year.

@Steven Luttman this was my 5th conference and I really enjoyed this conference en general.

The things I think went well:
➡️ I think for the most part the flow worked great. I think @Alexandra Hughes Pailet did a great job along with everyone that helped her in putting together the conference.
➡️ Once I figured out how to use the Whova app and how to find the meetups on the app then I was able to plan where I wanted to go for each hour of the day.
➡️ The people who attended were probabally the highlight. I met so many people great people this time compared to the last several times because I think the focus was on community rather than expert teaching and they really pushed people to post meetups during the conference so it was great to find like-minded people. I hosted an investing over seas meetup and had about 15 people come and it was a fantastic discussion among the group and everyone was really complementary and it turned out great.
➡️ I enjoyed meeting Eric the new CEO and talking about his experience and history with BP and sharing with him my history and experience with it too. During our conversation he pulled out his phone and asked me a couple of follow up questions on something that I had mentioned that I enjoyed about an earlier version of the app or website and he sent a message to the development team about our conversation (well to be truthful he may have just been ordering Uber Eats, I can’t be sure) but I would say he seamed very approachable and easy to talk to. I wish him lots of success in this role.
➡️ The morning and evening food options were a good bonus. I wasn’t expecting it but it was nice to have some breakfast snacks of fresh fruit and protein yogurt. And the evening munch and mingles had great variety in multiple locations so I think that turned out great.
➡️ I also got to meet @Chris Seveney for the first time in person which was great. And I got to chat with good old friends like @Mindy Jensen which is just the best.

Now for the things that in my opinion could have been better.
➡️ I missed some of the original crowd that used to speak on stage like @Brandon Turner and @David Greene and I would have liked to have seen them more and heard them speak at the event. I think a lot of BiggerPockets growth was fueled by them and it would be nice to get to hear about their journeys (the good, the bad, and the ugly). And to listen to the lessons they have learned through the market shifts. To me that is super valuable.
➡️ I didn’t connect with @Dan H. That would have been fun. There were 1600 people there I think and even though I got to meet some great people, I missed out on meeting more, but that is just a time constraint issue. I think the conference was a good time frame.
➡️ Some of the speakers in the breakouts were pretty dry (maybe that’s just my ego taking since I wasn’t selected to speak). Anyhow, here are a couple of suggestions that I think could be helpful to improve the breakout sessions (in addition to having me speak next year). 1. With some of the accounting or tax presentations, and I didn’t go to every session so I’m just sharing some ideas from some things I observed sticking my head in several of the rooms throughout the conference, and those subjects can be dry naturally, but having the presenters focused more on stories than details could be helpful. Then they can give everyone a bar code to their website to videos that they have created with more content geared towards specific people’s situations. That would be great for enjoyment and also great for places attendees could go to later to get specific content. Or another idea would be to have the more general subject covered in a morning session and then to have an afternoon session with the same presenter do a more in depth deep dive into their subject later in an afternoon session to a smaller group who want more nitty gritty details on the subject.
➡️ Having more chairs throughout the corridor. Standing and chatting is great but doing so for hours each day can get tiresome. So having more chairs around the perimeter that aren’t just for the sponsors may help some people be more comfortable as they sit and chat.
➡️ A suggestion box to make BP better. At the BP swag counter, you could have a box with pieces of paper where people could write down ideas and suggestions about ways to make BP even better. Who knows maybe a brilliant idea could come out of it.

All in all, this was the best BP conference that I have been to and I am looking forward to Denver next year.

Great feedback Shiloh. I love the idea of the suggestion box at the merch counter. Noted for next year! Glad you enjoyed the conference. We hope to see you again next year!

@Steven Luttman great perspective and a great recap of your BiggerPockets experience. Unfortunately, my team and I weren’t able to attend this year because we had another event already scheduled.

We did have several friends who attended, and based on their feedback and what we saw throughout the event, it sounds like BiggerPockets put together a very successful conference with investors and real estate professionals from all over the country.

I especially appreciate your point that “Bigger is not better. Better is better.” There are so many different paths to success in real estate, and connecting with people at different stages of their journey can provide valuable perspectives and insights.

Hopefully, all the new and aspiring investors who attended were able to make meaningful connections, learn from experienced professionals, and walk away with information that will help them build their businesses on the right foundation.

Congratulations to everyone who attended, and hopefully we’ll see you all at BiggerPockets 2027! Looking forward to connecting with many of you there.
