What to do after I graduate college

Question

Hello BP! I am a current senior in college majoring in finance. I house hacked my way into my first rental property this past year and now manage the rental myself. I am extremely interested in all things real estate but do not know how I want to pursue it after I graduate this year. I do know that I eventually want to start my own company and bring in like-minded people that have the same love for it as I do. I am just stuck on what the best route to take out of college to put me in the best position to do this. I know this is very ambitious, but I have always had big dreams (like playing D-1 baseball in the SEC). I have worked harder than anyone else for my dreams in life and I do not plan on stopping now. I would just love some advice on the best way to get there. Thank y'all so much! This community is unbelievable!

No matter what industry you are in, if your a business leader and cannot sell, you wont succeed.

Find jobs where you can make the most and increase your lendable capacity, but that are also tied into something with real estate that you are interested in. Finance gives you a lot of options, but you need to use your skillset to maximize the options out there in the niche you want to start with. Too many young people think their first job has to be the start of that exact career line, it doesn't. It has to be something that will help you move up no matter where you go next.

Work your a$$ off. Your 20s are for taking career risks, delaying gratification, and thinking long term. Maximize your earnings and live off of nothing. If it's not transportation, housing, or food, don't spend a dime on it.

I agree on the advice regarding sales if you won't hate it. 90% of your job as a business owner is going to be sales - especially at the beginning. If you can't sell, you're probably not going to build a solid business.

Don't make the mistake of romanticizing business ownership. You're signing up for an absolute meat grinder of a job with the hope that you can someday stabilize it and build something that could be put on cruise control or sold.

As for tactical advice, tap into your network and alumni network. If you did play baseball in the SEC, you have a real unfair advantage. Call the most successful people within your network/extended network and ask them for advice. That's likely to lead to them referring you to a potential employer.
