Tired of hearing people say get a REAL job.

I am constantly hearing "Get a REAL job". so i dont talk to anybody anymore. I am glad i found this group, now i can read, see what others are doing, and make connections. "get a REAL job" i inwardly smirk now cause i KNOW that it can be done. I will stay focused by creating positive connections.

Prior to doing REI full-time, I was a high priced IT consultant making $250K+ per year. People new I was "dabbling" in REI and thought I was crazy when I left. Most of society doesn't understand anything that isn't 9:00 to 5:00, with a somewhat guaranteed pay cheque. And it's up to you to decide how much much effort you want to put into this which will determine how much you will get in return.

Success is the greatest proof.

I just made that up. lol

    Oh, BOY!!! Can I relate to THIS topic!

    I took up entrepreneurship last time I got laid off. I even told the folks in my outplacement group, "Why get another j.o.b. so you can just get laid off again?"

    There was a similar thread about being tired of all the negative feedback.

    There will always be naysayers. But naysayers are not the ones that make progress.

    If you want to be snarky you can say "Just because you don't think you can do it doesn't mean that I can't!" that tends to shut people up.

    For lack of a better word, **** them. **** them! Now you know who to keep in your inner circle. It's becoming a cliche now that "you are the five people you surround yourself with" because there has been so much negativity amok.

    Move fast, and do business. You'll have no time for negativity. It cannot fit into your schedule when you are being productive. Do productive people hang out with the lazies?     Hi Annette

    The perfect response is to tell people that you are too busy creating wealth and taking control of your financial future.  You have found the perfect vehicle in real estate and then ask them if they want a ride.  I'm sure you're going to get a lot of dumb stares.

    People feel intimidated when they see someone like yourself taking things into their own hands.

    THEM: "Get a Real job"

    YOU: "You are right, I am pretty good at sales, if you know anyone interested in my skill set please give them my card! (*hand 5 cards*)"

    THEM: "I Di...."

    YOU: "I noticed your neighborhood has increased in value and you can most likely cash out for 8% over what it was going for when you purchased it 3 years ago... It may not seem like a huge upgrade now but the houses in (Insert school district here) have remained pretty stagnant over that time period".

    THEM: " But I.."

    YOU: "If you could put your kids in there it would be a huge advantage to their future growth.. I mean the science program there is amazing, they had 2 kids get admitted into MIT last year.... Crazy right?...I know!"

    THEM: "Hold O"

    YOU: "Right Amazing!!, They also have a football team that went all the way to nationals and their QB was not even half as good as your Johnny..."

    One thing I like about real estate investing: best of both worlds.... You can have a day job and operate rentals part time, too. The amount may depend on the individual and other factors (but most people probably could/should handle just a few for starters) 

     My experience is that banks seldom want to give loans to folks without jobs (unless they have lots of other reliable income, which is tough as a real estate newbie). So you are relegated to creative options without a day job (although this site does explore that). Plus, rental properties (or flips) seldom offer benefits, something as valuable as a salary today. And making enough to live, especially early, can be tough. So don't have to quit your day job right away to start investing in real estate (in fact, it probably helps, alot, to have  one at the outset or at least a partner/spouse with a job). Of course, as mentioned above, it also can eventually free you from a day job, too.. the neat part...

    i love all the responses. Great pointers. I have an entrepreneur personality, i also like to play at small business operation- I started a small wild food plant business that I am looking to legalize this year.  I feel why work for somebody when you can work for yourself and make more in less time. But honestly I am thinking bout getting a part time job for added funds to do my business project and my land development project. 

    I also have a son who i am going to talk to about partnering up with me on the land/ development i have, to give more creditials in income and credit. i do believe we can go forward with this land development.

    At the end of the day just keep grinding, do your research, and go get it. Let your success do the talking. I personally have a "Real Job" and cannot wait until I can live off my Rental cashflows. Good luck!!!

    This is an awesome, awesome thread!!  People like this are never satisfied because even if you did have a 9-5 they will say " well why aren't you doing (insert some corporate job here)?"

    I'm kidding. I think it's awesome to see someone get out of the grind in a SMART way. Some are shooting themselves in the foot, but some legitimately need to get that time sink out of the way to make bigger things happen!

    When I had a REAL job, I spent a helluva lot more time on BP during the work day because I couldn't stand my job and needed the escape that BP provided.  Now that I don't have that job any more, I have less time to spend on BP because I'm out managing my properties better, looking for the next deal and generally building MY business, not my boss's business.

    Hello All, 

    This is truly something that I have heard. It's funny, because "aren't all jobs that result in money.... REAL?" I work for a temporary agency and had this said to me and my first thought was.... it is a REAL job. I am a REAL person, doing a REAL task, getting paid REAL money to do it!  (The temporary agency provides benefits.) 

    Anyway, I will be working at my REAL job, while working on my REAL ESTATE business part time - until it pays enough for me to do it full time. (Play on word real...just tell them it is real....its in the name... real estate. lol)

    @Annette A.  I got my Real Estate sales license in CA. at 18  41 years later I have never had a real job.. I am unemployable in the parlance of our time.

    if I went for a job interview and they asked me what my salary expectations were I would blurt that out they would think that is yearly and what I really mean is monthly  :)

    but its not been a bed of roses but I would not trade it for anything..

    that sounds awesome @Linda Weygant. Doing "your" business and not your bosses.  That's it... you become no longer enslaved to 9-5 job at the head master of a boss.. working as a slave for slave labour.  Once somebodies eyes have been enlightened, one does not want to stay at that place but to move upwards to doing what you are doing. Manangging your properties, your business. :D cant beat that.

    @Jay Hinrichs i like you. You prove it can be done with out a "standard- college degree" that is another thing people say, "Go to college- it will open doors." or something along those lines, but what it really does is pile on the debt. I fell for that line and went to a 2 yr college a couple of years ago... all i got was wasted time i could of been "DOING" something, and a heap load of debt. :/

    thats what they tell our kids in highschool. 1/ go to college 2/ go work for somebody

    we are programed to think that way, so when someone says that, "Get a REAL job" they REALly dont understand any other way cause they have preconditioned to think that way.

    Entrepreneurs are the people who work 80 hours per week so we don't have to work 40 hours per week for someone else.

    We also get to do whatever we want, whenever we want. 

    THAT'S why we don't get a "real" job.

     Yours is the nice way of putting it; because you are just that nice, Ned. Me, on the other hand - "shut the hell up" was what they heard... Of course, I haven't heard "get a real job" in a while. I think it's cause I make more money then them...just a little more :)

    @Annette A., It's funny, I have been told the same thing for my last 2 jobs. I was a fly fishing guide for 12 years and people kept asking me when I was going to get a 'real job'. My answer was " you mean doing something I hate just to make ends meet?" The same question is asked of me now, but I just laugh and respond with, when I am ready to enter the life of boredom I guess then I will have a real job. Cheers!

    I don't really have people saying that, more like "That's what you do? How do make any money?" I shrug it off and silently LAUGH to myself.
