How much would it cost to put in air conditioning?

Hi all,

We are looking to make an offer on  property.  When we went to see the property we noticed that the outside air conditioning units were "missing".   The setup was for 2 units,  I'm not an HVAC person and since I don't own the property I haven't gotten around to get a quote.  Does anyone know ballpark how much it would be to replace them.

I just bought a Ductless Heating and Air Conditioning for my rental.
It's quiet and energy efficient.  It's called a Minisplitsystems.  You can install it yourself and pay a HVAC  to inspect and startup.

Usually, costs depend on the area. I find inspectors, real estate agents and especially property managers to be good sources for contractor referrals. I'd call and get estimates from a few and go from there. Hope that helps!

I did not idicate that it was a stupid question. And that was the point of that statement!  Even if it makes you look stupid, go ahead and post it (your statement). There are many here who will be glad to help correct your misunderstanding. And the way it is done (usually) is not with anyone looking down on someone else but in a helpful mode.

This is for a 2500 sqft home that was built within the last 3 years, so I can't exactly let tenants bring window units.  We're going to budget 3000 for it.

Is there a specific brand that I would request bids for?  Also, would you guys suggest 4 tons (2 2 ton units), do you think that would be enough?

But, yes, for a 2500 sq ft home (presumably two levels with an A/C condenser for each level), having two 2-Ton units likely sufficient.  And if you're replacing 2-Ton unit on a 3-year-old house, the evaporator coils inside should be fine.

If this is a rental, ask for the cheapest brand the guy can get...they're pretty much all the same, though the higher end brands may last a couple years more.

$3000 should be plenty...if you get bids for more than that shop around...

Is this going to bre a rental?  If so, do you really want to replace outside units that have already been stolen once?  Except in very high end units, I let the tenants provide their own window air conditioners.
