How does a 27 year old become a real estate developer ?

Question

I have wanted to get involved in real estate development for a long time now and ready to began my journey. How does some one start real estate development? I am in Houston a coming upon my last semester in grad school. Advice please or anything thank you

Hi, @Phil Pat my goal is to become a real estate developer but I am starting out as an agent first for 2-3 years to learn the business. I grew up assisting my family of developers and architects but want more experience before I jump into it.

My only advice at the moment is to read "The Real Book of Real Estate by Robert Kiyosaki" it is a brilliant read. Feel free to connect and shoot me a PM since we are both trying to get the ball rolling on becoming a developer.

Hey, @Phil Pat! I think @Scott Mac said it best - find someone that is doing exactly what you want to do and reach out to them. I had some luck with this in Denver as I found someone who, when I read about her business and profile, was doing exactly what I had envisioned for myself in the future. You can look here, LinkedIn, Real Estate Investing meet ups, etc. Start networking and find yourself a mentor! :)

((Best)) way I can think of is have some money to invest and partner with a more experienced developer who is doing what you want to do.

Come in as a Jr. type partner in the deal, and work full time at it--learning.

By Jr. type partner I mean you are not calling the shots, but are in on all meetings and all aspects of the project.

After a few deals maybe you want to go it on your own, or maybe just keep on partnering....

A good partnership is a definite strength--but it depends on the person.

I would say that is the (BEST) way to learn a particular development type.

If you lack meaningful money try befriending a few developers and just talk shop as well as friendship things, and see what turns up.

But to be a developer you will need to have a good sized chunk of change to risk (possibly losing) to do a deal.

I would really focus on learning.  You can find the money if you really want to but if you don't know what you are doing you could be heading towards a very difficult and costly path.  I would follow the advice most people have put here.

Create your path/experience. Dive in heads first. Additionally a mentor can be incredibly impactful. Someone to glean experience from, ask questions and ultimately share what it is you want to do/where you want to go. Most times, people are more than willing to help.
