Poor credit due to a divorce

Dear BP family, 

I have a potential tenant with a good income and a 584 credit score. She says she used to have a better credit score and she's going through a divorce now which negatively affected her credit score.

I was just wondering if it's true, can divorce have a negative effect on the credit score?
