CRM for direct mail question

Does anyone have recommendations for a platform that will help organize a direct mail marketing?  I would love to have a better way to document who I have sent mail to, when and for what.  I have been hand writing, so needles to say it would also be great to find a better way to systematize this so I am not hand writing letters.  

That being said, are there any metrics or market research out there that discuss the convert rate of hand writing vs other forms of direct mail-mailers?
