Considering foreclosures for my first niche

Recently I had a discussion with a plumbing contractor while at a remodel during which I expressed interest in foreclosures thinking it may be a bit easier dealing with a bank rather than an owner, but he tells me it's the opposite and banks make money when they don't sell. Any truth to this? Thanks in advance.
