Got sunroof Should I be worried about hail storm?

Question

Hello,

In my rental there is a sunroof/skylights in

couple of places (kitchen and bathroom)

We never had a hail storm before but the thought about it freaks me out, should I just

close those skylights and convert it into a regular roof. I was actually considering implanting a Tesla roof on top of existing roof

Appreciate your inputs.

We have sunroofs in our primary and we get some hail but no big stones. Don’t give it a second thought. You could just as easily get smacked in a car accident. All the best!

Those are designed to withstand hail just like the rest of the roof. Don't worry about it. If you plant to install a new roof later, you can consider covering them up then.

The glass is tempered just like a windshield - so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Personally I wouldn’t but a Tesla roof on as I would question the roi on it as it’s very cost prohibitive

Cool ... can you open/close the "sunroof" too!?  hmmm.... I think most of the time, they are called "skylights!"  (sorry, couldn't resist!) LOL

Some info for you:  The regular dome types, are hard plastic or "acrylic."  They are sloped and actually do ok in common hail storms.  Severe hail storms, yes of course there's a chance of them breaking (like most things!)  The flat glass ones do hold up better in larger sized hail, but again, nothing is hail "proof."   But know, a skylight opening is not meant to be "energy efficient."  Most skylights are installed to brighten a space, or for ambiance, etc.

Instead of acrylic, you can use a Polycarbonate type of material.  It is considered "hail-resistant" and does stand up to larger hail much better (think of a shatter-proof window) but there are trade offs... Yes they costs a "bit" more, AND they tend to also get cloudy over the years. (the bronze/gray tinted lens)  The white or frosted do better (and resist a bit more heat).

As Nathan said above, if at some point you want to take them out and all, wait until you install a new roof (usually removing the old one first), and then do the structural work (for larger openings) and cover-over then.
