Owning half a house

I am looking for multi-unit properties in a heavy renter community in Pa.  When I call to inquire about the properties it seems that only half the house is for sale.  The price they are asking seems like it should be for the whole thing.  My question is, does anyone out there own half a house as a investment?  It just seems strange to me to buy half a house. Thanks for the time and information.

I don't mind owning half a house as long as I own the half that pays rent! :D
