Splitting electric meter on MultiFamily

Posted

I'm looking into buying a 3 unit building in Kansas City. It's on a single electric meter. Does anyone know how much would it cost to split into three separate electric meters? I'm not worried about any electrical inside the building (I can estimate that myself) I'm just unsure about the split meter cost. Thanks!

I think the above is in range to the high side. Not sure if you are from the area but Kcpl requires a 5 leg meter can. Be carefully when purchasing. Also if it’s all on one meter now do you know it is separated by unit on interior wiring? I would bet it’s not. You can only separate it if they are separated already. If not you will need to rewire inside. If you replace what’s considered 50% or more of the electrical you will be required to bring the entire system up to code as well. Gfci, gfci breakers. Sheetrock repairs Etc. that can get into some cash in that case.
