tenant wants a discount for rent

Ellen A.
Posted

my tenant is asking for a discount on rent.

we bought the house and it had many hidden problems. I have addressed ALL of the issues. she was inconvenienced but the workers said it wa ls NOT uninhabitable.  there was 1 day without water so I told her to send me the hotel receipt and we would deduct it from the rent.  she wants more of a discount.  it was messy . I'm struggling to pay the repair Bill's. I dont think legally I am required to give her a discount.  I am not sure about ethically.

some of the workers mentioned the tenant was talkative and distracting the workers and dragged out the job longer than it needed to be.

I would like opinions on whether or not to discount rent and if not specifically the words to use to say "no" diplomatically .

@Jeremy Roberts so true. I discounted the rent one time and received 2 more requests IN THE SAME LEASE to discount the rent. You do it once, they will expect it every time you need to make a repair.

My advice would be to cover the hotel costs and acknowledge that sometimes unforeseen repairs are necessary.
