City ran over my septic lateral lines

My fiance and I recently bought a duplex in Illinois that is on a spetic sytem. We called the city to have the water turned on. When they came to turn it on, they were unable to turn the valve. I was surprised were the meter was placed, in the backyard three feet away from the house. So they had to  replace the meter setter and the meter pit. In the process, they drove all over my back yard with a backhoe when the ground was very soft. Now, I'm worried that this may have damaged the leech field and that the septic may have trouble percolating in the future. There was clear access to the pit without driving over the leech field. And, I got a chance to talk to one of the employees before they started. I asked him to please not drive over the part of the yard with the spetic system and explained exactly were that was. Should I wait and see what happens, discuss this with my local municipality, or contact a lawyer?

It probably didn't hurt anything but you may not know for a while.I'd send a letter of documentation with pictures showing the ruts, make written statements that you specifically pointed out the leech field location and instructed the workers to NOT drive over that area and also if you can document who the actual workers were that would be good.
