If you shampoo your carpets, forget about buying the high dollar Bissel and Rug Doctor carpet shampoo mixes.  They are about $20 a bottle.  Get Fabuloso general purpose cleaner to put in your machine.  It's about $3 for the same size bottle and does just as good a job.  I've been using it for about 5 years.  The money you save can be put towards imported beer, high end whisky or a nice chianti with fava beans.

I've used auto upholstery cleaner that comes out as a foam to clean spots on carpet. It is amazing.
