Hello Bigger Pockets community, my name is Paul Singh. I come from an Art background, graduated from Columbia College Chicago with BFA in Graphic Design. Worked as a Designer for a few years and then realized that "a job" will not make me financially free. So I decided to go into business - haha - typical indian thing to do buy a gas station. I've been in business for the last 10 years, it has been great. But now I think it is time to shift on a bigger picture - Retirement.

Thats why I am here on Biggerpockets.com, trying to figure out how to retire, and be financially free. God blessed my family with a daughter - First child to be born in the family after 35 years - I want to spend more time with her.

I have started listening to the podcasts about 3 days ago - I am on podcast #17 as i am writing this post. At the end of each podcast Josh and Brandon ask a few questions, If you don't mind i would like to ask a question to the Bigger Pockets community.

What keeps you focused, what is that one thing that drives you to move forward?

Thanks
Paul Singh

Replied

Paul

It has been years since I had a job, but I remember who motivated me to escape.  I tell this story often.  I had an old pair of shoes that I wore all the time.  I promised myself that I would not buy another pair until I could retire.  I was making 100k per year back then, I could afford new shoes.  After a while my shoe wore a hole in itself, and I walked around for months with a hole in my shoe.  Everytime it rained, I ended up with wet socks and a wet foot.  That constant reminder got my back side going.  The rest is history.

Find your carrot and stick.  The carrot for me was a new pair of shoes, the stick was my wet foot.  As silly as that story is, it is true.  That was an important part of my motivation and my escape plan.

to your success

Josh
