New to site and maybe I don't understand

Maybe I am confused, just joined and was looking to form connections with others. But after attempting to become colleagues with some users who I found of interest, that I thought we could network. I was banned! Please can someone explain what this site does? Is it just to read post and respond without making any connection if so; I'm out. Looking to build relationship and add to my team as well as learn and help others.

Yes, advertising and self promotion are restricted on the general forums and messaging system.  How I make connections is by getting involved in the community (forums) and answering questions.  I establish myself as an expert in my niche and area, and then I have people reaching out to me for business that fits in with what I do.
