Intro - Long distance investing (International)

Jess Wood
Posted

Hi all I wanted to introduce myself.

NC to Central Asia. I call Reddit home. 27/M/SINK. Techie cog in the machine.

There is more to life than the 9-5. So I aimed for financial independence/early retirement (FIRE) by indexing and risky investments.

Now seeking to do it earlier with more cushion. So I can spend my time on what truly matters... Taking a never ending vacation eating purple ube ice cream on some Pacific Island with my dog, the Duke of Wake.

Joking aside.

***Enter Real Estate***

The pursuit to FIRE faster introduced me to real estate....

It all started after listening to the Audiobook, Set for Life by Scott Trench.

It dawned on me that wealth (fatFIRE) doesn't have to be esoteric, it has a path. And those who've gone before have mapped it out.

In the book, the key point that sunk in was a double combo return of forced appreciation and rent. Cash flow and equity. The numbers for this added up to be significantly greater than any index investments would give.

It has since been a year since listening to it. If I still lived in the states, I would house hack. But I now find myself overseas and will have to enter the world of real estate remotely. (Unable to invest in residing country for a variety of reasons).

I'm looking into reallocating and diversifying into real estate. After this past year, I've been able to save enough to get started.

All of that leads me here. Making connections in the same way I acquire my properties - long distance.

The next actionable steps for me are building a team to begin the 'double combo return.'

So far it looks like I'll need the following: Realtor, property manager, rehabber/contractor, and a loan person.

Extra preference: A cool person friend who's 'made it' through real estate and is caught up with GoT

Looking forward to my new home here!

Welcome to bigger pockets. About five years ago I was reading Mr money mustache and decided I wanted to FIRE earlier than index funds would allow. I was also living overseas and decided to invest in multi family properties in Chattanooga. Best decision ever, it has worked out better than expected.

The market has changed some so it will be a little more difficult for you to get the same kind of deals i got back then but with creativity and determination you can make it work.
