California is on fire and they don't have enough water to stop it.

California is the richest state in the USA.

California has 3,427 miles of Coastline.

@James Wise you're right about California's bad leadership.  But that's not why it's on fire.

Here is how I get my perspective:  I was a firefighter in CA for about a decade in my former life.  The house I'm sitting in right now is on a hill with 270 degree views and I can see about ten miles in each direction.  Nearly every house I can see from here burned to the ground in 2017, including the house that was on this very lot and almost every house on this street.  5,300 in total.  Thankfully, at that time I lived just a bit to the south and the winds blew the fire right by my house, missing by 3,000 feet.  I woke up that morning to a wall of fire as far as I could see.

I drove to my office, everything around me was on fire including the landscaping and dumpsters in the parking lot--no firefighters around.  But the office itself didn't burn.

The fire had traveled ten miles in about 3 hours. You can't get mutual aid (with a several hour ETA) in time to stop it. The calvary arrives just in time to mop up.

I have a second home in Maui, and as I look out in one direction the entire town I used to see burned to the ground in 2023.  The wind blew that fire to our south, this time missing us by almost a mile.  This is becoming all too familiar, and yet I'm extraordinarily lucky that I suffered no direct fire loss in any of these.

In both of these fires, hydrants didn't work.  Firefighting resources were overwhelmed.  Winds were near or exceeding hurricane force.  The fire created it's own weather including "fire tornados".

Part of the reasons hydrants didn't work was some water storage was already depleted for maintenance.  Power was shut off to prevent it from starting more fire (or was killed by the fire) and this power is what drives the municipal water pumps.  Homes burned, leaving their water service lines severed and freely flowing water onto the ground, depleting the pressure.  It's just chaos.

Suggestions above include:

To not rebuild and convert the land over to parkland.  How do you buy out over 5,000 homeowners?  Infeasible.

To build out of concrete block.  Ok, but from my house I can see what used to be a K-mart about a mile away.  It was made out of concrete block and it burned to the ground, along with a lot of other concrete and brick structures.  My next door neighbor built their house out of poured in place concrete.  Will it help?  Maybe.  The building codes are pretty strict.  Ours is built with stucco siding, concrete tile roof, tempered windows, self-closing soffit and crawl space vents (they melt when exposed to heat).  A lot of structures go up because the intense radiant heat from the wildfire ignites contents inside the home through the windows, or the embers enter the attics and crawl spaces through the vents--so just building from block won't be a cure.

Build with steel.  These fires are so hot even the steel structures melted and burned.  The winds were so strong and fire so hot there were cars turned upside down in driveways, and then melted.

The bottom line is that 100 mph winds combined with dry grass and just about any ignition source is unstoppable once it gets going.  If the fire can be knocked down in its infancy you can save entire towns.  And that's what usually happens--there are hundreds of fires no one hears about.  But the ones that aren't stopped right away and get a head on them, when close to an urban area, with wind like this, will cause extreme devastation.  No amount of water will stop it.

And don't even get me started on insurance.  My $7,500 policy was "non-renewed" and I only got two quotes:  $42K and $92K.  Then by a stroke of luck I found another quote for $13K.  If that carrier doesn't stay afloat it's pretty dismal.

If you do have an AK, hopefully your using hollow points.  So, they don't travel as far beyond point of impact.

If you can switch to a 12 gauge with bird shot or OOB.  Rifle bullets fly well beyond what you could be legally supported. Also, they can penetrate neighbors' walls easier.  12 Gauges are just a lot scarier, more accurate within 10 to 20 yards- especially during times of stress, do more damage, plus less impact to neighbors.

    Reposting from another LA post.

Sidenote on the LA fires. Talked with my brother this morning. He was in charge one year for the military NAcom joint command fire efforts for San Diego up to the bottom of LA. Asked him about the current situation. His primary focus was to protect all military bases in that region. But by federal or Presidential directive his resources were used to manage fires all the way up to Oregon/Washington.

He said the 2007 fires in San Diego were far larger than the current LA fires. Just less Movie Stars. At the time Governor Schwarzenegger contacted President Bush to make the San Diego fires a national Disaster area. There were 5 fires at that time. Just for one of the fires they immediately mobilized 20,000 troops for door to door fire and rescue efforts. Had over 20 pump trucks, over xx Helicopters and over 40 C17 style water aircraft in play.

They also helped the Oregon and Washington forest fires. They had the 40 Aircraft getting water from lakes and Oceans. They couldn't put a dent into it. That is without the Santa Ana winds.

They did make a recommendation to LA to install large dams or holding tanks for sea water high in the hills and pump from the ocean. The gravity pressure would have operated the system. But LA did not want to do that. Also using water tank trucks to get water from the ocean and driving back and forth would not be a viable solution.

As far as running out of water. The normal water tower and hydrant system would never work for this type of fire. Think of all of the water sprinkler systems in commercial buildings. They would have been activated also, plus kept using water even as the buildings were burnt down. Along with the fire trucks, the water system was not capable of handling such a situation.

With the above said. So, what. These events can be seen ahead. Example: California has been in a drought forever. But they just had floods.

    A. Floods lead to heavy vegetation growth.

    B. Heavy vegetation growth leads to large fires.

    C. Large fires lead to large mud slides. Next news for LA will be massive mud slides.

As far as not having enough water. California actually has the largest lake in the country except for the Great Lakes. Tulare lake comes and goes as it is used for agriculture ground and is pumped out or diverted. It reappeared just last year. They had tons of water to store. It's a matter of choice and actions.

We have two properties. Since owning them, we have installed features to store over 5,000,000 gallons of water in the soil that did not exist before. That is just one family. California's topography allows for far more water storage than where we live.

Not being from/in California, I'm not familiar with the specific laws of La La Land. As for the lack of burnable material in the Palisades and other areas now, insurers will want to rebuild reserves and augment reserves for the next time, not to mention not exposing themselves to risk on this scale again.

what I see happening is that the government will simply cut the Gordian Knot by using eminent domain to seize properties and redesign/rezone the whole area so that it's more defensible against natural- and human-caused catastrophe. The plans will probably be developed while the government plans, carries out, or coerces, clean up, and puts liens on the properties being cleaned up.

OK being a life long CA and selling and developing land here for 50 years.. I dont think that will happen as you describe I am not arguing its not the right thing to do.. but I dont see how its going to fly given the area and political power of those that own in Pacific Palisades and Malibu etc etc

For home protection I prefer a 20 gauge pump action. I don't have to worry about collateral casualties from a round going through a wall, like with a rifle, and the best thing is the unique sound working the pump makes. Scares the gang members off every time.

Never cared for ARs because they are based on M-16s and M-16A1s. I loathed those things in the service. I like AK-51s though.

Have the same question with my wife.  Actually, scared to give her a gun.  We are going with both the pepper pellet pistols (haven't looked at them yet) and definitely putting the large can of wasp spray cans around the house, that reach out to 20 feet.

the cow mtn fire in Lake co  Ca in 1981 the fire line was over 10 miles wide and moving at 10 to 15 miles and hour I sat and watched it from my house only thing that kept it from getting to us was the pear orchards. sky is dark as night and ash everywhere and in that fire the temp was about 108 or so.. its other worldly no stopping it.. .same kind of terrain and fuel load as LA vegitation.. heavy brush.. Even watching the Oakland Hills fire from across the bay was wild.

Have any experience with one of these? I’ve seen mixed reviews. I’m partial to an old-school lever action marlin in the same caliber as my sidearm (lightweight .44 if I’m in grizzly territory or .357 revolver if not) myself. Cowboy style. Not quite as good as a fancy Glock paired with an AR functionally, but plenty good enough and much better optics in the courtroom than those black military looking guns, if it ever comes to that.

What started the fires?  Negligent forest management, drug addicts, or illegals?  DEI policies along with environmental, immigration policies is not sustainable for a non 3rd world country (my guess that is the point).  I read an article I thought articulated this very well, we are seeing the collapse of a very complex system and this the fruit.

Or it could be an arsonist/ arsonists.

    c

OMG it is not arsonists, maybe some of the fires were but I'm right here in the burn scar with my AK. it was wildfires!

Feel for you and your neighbors. Best wishes.

Will re-post some insurance and fire posts I already did for LA fires.

Open to ideas for something to get my wife. She can't handle a long gun.

Byrna    it has an effective range of 60'

Have any experience with one of these? I’ve seen mixed reviews. I’m partial to an old-school lever action marlin in the same caliber as my sidearm (lightweight .44 if I’m in grizzly territory or .357 revolver if not) myself. Cowboy style. Not quite as good as a fancy Glock paired with an AR functionally, but plenty good enough and much better optics in the courtroom than those black military looking guns, if it ever comes to that.

Yeah but the much earlier versions. They've done a lot of evolution to them and I've heard nothing but rave reviews from everyone on em.

Back in the day I used to lug around a ported .44 Desert Eagle. I was young, lol. But man that thing packed a punch.

4-10 with rock salt for deterrence. Ya tag something with that, it sent a message, a memorable one.

I didn't like killing stuff I didn't have to, even coyote or wolf. There just trying to eek out a living too. But needed em to understand not to make that on our cows, chickens, turkeys etc..

Bill Burr I saw today had a great take on the fires. All the people who do not live there are sitting around in our underwear getting fat on our couches and are like "yeah they are mismanaging a wildfire" and most of us cannot put out a candle never mind a fire - like we are all now experts on how to put out wildfires....

Haha I saw that too. Do you think he read this thread and was talking about @James Wise specifically?

    @James Wise

I'm getting lean in 2025 bro. Down 24lbs over last 6/mo dawg.

That's awesome, keep it going bro.

Hard part is keeping on the muscle mass. I was able to bench 295lbs at one point. No longer possible with the calorie deficit eating this damn rabbit food. But wife didn't want me having a heart attack, so here we are.

well for sure stay off the Ruben balls then.

She might be able to handle a 20g shotgun? Less recoil. Or a good ole revolver in .38 will always work...

bought some slugs for my 20 guage would not want to get hit with one of those.. My son and I go shooting most every weekend the Tillamook  forest has shooting lanes and its really cool up in  the big timber.. WE set up our clay thrower on a ridge and launch those things over the clear cut.. generally go through 2 full boxs of clays an outing and another 300 plus rounds of 9mm 45 acp and 357.. My son is a great shot I am getting their with the pistol.. But really enjoy busting the clays.

@Chris Seveney Bill Burr " bra"?, as one of my kids would say. Forest fires are an industry and they are managed for profitability. When I was a kid we were able to play outside all summer long with no smoke now kids are stuck inside for 3 weeks while the fires are "managed." Forests, timber and fires are managed completely different then they used to be it seems fair to ask if those differences are having an impact (because of coarse they are).  I would go a step further and say anyone thinking this topic through in good faith would not be so quick to dismiss the mismanagement for our forests the way politicians, media etc have.

Speaking of those clay throwers, one of my most humbling moments as a  shooter was shooting clays with a Teams guy. I was barely hitting them with the 12 gauge, and he was taking them out of the air with his Glock 17...lol

I could do that if the clays were the size of a a garbage can lid :)  We have 4 different shot guns for clays just to get variety  berreta silver pigeon 20 and one 12.. my old remington 870 wingmaster I used to use for geese and my grandfathers browning auto light 12 which is 75 years old but shoots very well.. Big deal out here is going to be buying ammo.. The next RE play is going to be building ammo stores on the interstate and state lines between CA and NV and Oregon and WA and ID.. WE have all sorts of rifles and AK etc etc.. Its a pleansant afternoon with proper ear protection :)
