@James Wise you're right about California's bad leadership.  But that's not why it's on fire.

Here is how I get my perspective:  I was a firefighter in CA for about a decade in my former life.  The house I'm sitting in right now is on a hill with 270 degree views and I can see about ten miles in each direction.  Nearly every house I can see from here burned to the ground in 2017, including the house that was on this very lot and almost every house on this street.  5,300 in total.  Thankfully, at that time I lived just a bit to the south and the winds blew the fire right by my house, missing by 3,000 feet.  I woke up that morning to a wall of fire as far as I could see.

I drove to my office, everything around me was on fire including the landscaping and dumpsters in the parking lot--no firefighters around.  But the office itself didn't burn.

The fire had traveled ten miles in about 3 hours. You can't get mutual aid (with a several hour ETA) in time to stop it. The calvary arrives just in time to mop up.

I have a second home in Maui, and as I look out in one direction the entire town I used to see burned to the ground in 2023.  The wind blew that fire to our south, this time missing us by almost a mile.  This is becoming all too familiar, and yet I'm extraordinarily lucky that I suffered no direct fire loss in any of these.

In both of these fires, hydrants didn't work.  Firefighting resources were overwhelmed.  Winds were near or exceeding hurricane force.  The fire created it's own weather including "fire tornados".

Part of the reasons hydrants didn't work was some water storage was already depleted for maintenance.  Power was shut off to prevent it from starting more fire (or was killed by the fire) and this power is what drives the municipal water pumps.  Homes burned, leaving their water service lines severed and freely flowing water onto the ground, depleting the pressure.  It's just chaos.

Suggestions above include:

To not rebuild and convert the land over to parkland.  How do you buy out over 5,000 homeowners?  Infeasible.

To build out of concrete block.  Ok, but from my house I can see what used to be a K-mart about a mile away.  It was made out of concrete block and it burned to the ground, along with a lot of other concrete and brick structures.  My next door neighbor built their house out of poured in place concrete.  Will it help?  Maybe.  The building codes are pretty strict.  Ours is built with stucco siding, concrete tile roof, tempered windows, self-closing soffit and crawl space vents (they melt when exposed to heat).  A lot of structures go up because the intense radiant heat from the wildfire ignites contents inside the home through the windows, or the embers enter the attics and crawl spaces through the vents--so just building from block won't be a cure.

Build with steel.  These fires are so hot even the steel structures melted and burned.  The winds were so strong and fire so hot there were cars turned upside down in driveways, and then melted.

The bottom line is that 100 mph winds combined with dry grass and just about any ignition source is unstoppable once it gets going.  If the fire can be knocked down in its infancy you can save entire towns.  And that's what usually happens--there are hundreds of fires no one hears about.  But the ones that aren't stopped right away and get a head on them, when close to an urban area, with wind like this, will cause extreme devastation.  No amount of water will stop it.

And don't even get me started on insurance.  My $7,500 policy was "non-renewed" and I only got two quotes:  $42K and $92K.  Then by a stroke of luck I found another quote for $13K.  If that carrier doesn't stay afloat it's pretty dismal.

Red leg partridge hunting in Spain. I'm really good with a rifle but one of our group with early onset???? With hand shakes still out shot me. This would be a great REI investment. They had 25,000 acres though. So would have to be cheap land.

Since this post is about the California fires.  This location is really dry.   I explained how they could triple their water source from their land.  Hopefully I can go back and see if they put any of the measures in place.   California with both its terrain and rainfall can easily increase their water storage by a factor of 10.  Very inexpensive to do.

I would go a step further and say anyone thinking this topic through in good faith would not be so quick to dismiss the mismanagement for our forests the way politicians, media etc have.

I don't see too many people dismissing the huge share of blame that belongs directly on the shoulders of the California leadership. They are trying to twist the facts, but it is too late for that. For sure this puts a large dent in Newsom's plan to run in '28.Complete and devastating neglect/idiocy for what, 14 yrs? And I wouldn't be surprised if Mayor Bass is removed as well....the $17 mm cut to LAFD budget and 30% of fire trucks sitting awaiting repair, it goes on and on (not all directly her fault, but hey she's where the buck stops.

Pretty sparse....some nice homes in Castaic proper. The town of Gorman is up there. The wind is freaking howling. Looks like 5 is shut down, probably being used as the fire break.

Pretty much, 5 shut down right there at magic mountain and closed all the way over the grapevine to the truck stops at Lebec. The fires mostly on the L.A. side of the hill. East of 5.

Global warming now is the nudge for a lot of fires, hurricanes, etc. it will soon be accepted as the primary cause. If something is not all white doesn’t mean it’s all black.

The message is the same, you tailor for the marketing. For those of a scientific bent, one says global warming. For those who think ideology counts as a bona fide fact, one says climate change.

If it was a "fact" that carbon emissions, carbon in the atmosphere, is factually the culprit for climate change.

And all these things are, factually, a result of climate change.....

Why isn't anyone sending me $4 billion to launch daily carbon capture filters into the air to remove it all back down to net 0 in a few years??????

Hell, I'll give a discount and we'll call it $2 billion.

Think about it. How dang cheap is it? A mylar balloon, the cording, bus sized filters or heck, let's make em building size, it's cheap, crazy cheap.

Launch in S hemisphere where there is a fraction the air traffic of N.

If all this billions upon billions upon billions of damage WAS because of carbon caused climate change..... And we have the tools for cheap to capture carbon...... Why isn't anyone doing it? Why isn't UN or any government funding it?

Hi James, I think it is about time we stop pointing the figure at who is at fault.  It is very easy to look from afar and make accusations without not being there to experience the reality of the situation.  It might be a good time to come together instead of passively displaying your political views on a platform dedicated to real estate investing.  If this post was about how we can help these poor people who have lost their homes, then you would garner more attention that goes to a cause.  That's making a difference.  It seems like you are pretty successful.  I hope you are trying to put your resources to help these people.  Just my honest opinion after looking at this.

to me the biggest evidence of global warming is the Pine Beetle infestations. One just has to take a low level flight over British Columbia interior Mtn area so see miles upon miles of Beetle kill. I have personally Witnessed this when flying my plane to Kamloops on fishing trips U can really see if from a few thousand fee AGL and of course there is damage in the US Pine forests as well. . This according to those that know say its because warmer weather has allowed them to grow and spread instead of being killed off in the deep freeze.. Then the other thing is Ice wine hard to make anymore as it does not get cold like it did in years past and stay cold long enough to feeze the grapes as they hang they now have to harvest then freeze them in facilities. And Oregon wine industry is doing better as it warms up this way and CA gets hotter and its affecting those grapes although wine industry as a whole is down as gen Z are not into wine like us boomers.

    Yup.

400'is - 900's ad, was an "ice age". Than again 1300's-1850's the "mini ice age" or better known as the "dark ages".

What made those happen? It's a cycle, the planet has NEVER sat at a static climate, it's an ever changing and cycling thing.

Now do i think human activities can have impact on this, 100%. But that's the question never answered and always glanced over is what, to what degree, in what direction.

And than, the ACTIONS. Was there a push for global carbon capture to lesson this thing of impact? Nope. Instead, the answer was to make a new money making market off of it. A Carbon Stock Market. Invent a global tax (Carbon Tax) and invent a token of credit against those tax's (carbon credits) and shazam a market where traders can buy, sell trade, option, leverage, hedge against these and the flow of them. A new Wall Street, CARBON STREET.

Nobody put 1/10 the effort into carbon capture that they did to shazam this new "Carbon Street".

So what do the actions say? It's mostly about making $ out of the world economy WITHOUT actually producing anything of value.

If we took every trader from W.S. and threw them into the ocean today, how much less food would the farmer make next week? What factories would stop? How many electricians would hang up the belt and wait to die. NONE.

It is an item of MAKING MONEY and NOT of producing, transporting or bring to market any goods or services at all. It is the "Mosquitos" of the economic system.

    What will more "mosquitos" solve?

Not a damn thing. And they know that, there not dumb.

But sheeple sure as heck ARE dumb. Happy to turn off brains and regurgitate what "Baaahhha" the herd is yelling of the day. Even if straight off a cliff.
