SFH conversion to duplex ? Can this be done ?!

Newbie REI curious what restrictions or considerations one has to consider beyond strictly construction costs if one wants to convert a SFR like a 4/2BR or something similar to convert to duplex w 2 2br/1BA units Thanks in advance.... are there City or county codes that restrict such or parking issues etc...any other considerations...? Any idea of typical costs? Would love thoughts from BP to know if this is a pipe dream or something that can be done in most, some or no SFH neighborhoods? Thanks in advance.
