Purchase starter home in SF Bay Area

Hello

I've been learning and listening to the BiggerPockets Podcasts. They recommend purchasing or flipping your first purchase near your home. This is difficult at best in the Bay Area. Is anyone buying properties within a 2 hour radius or out of state for their first starter homes?
