Anybody have experience with lead pipes?

A house that I am interested in was just inspected and was found to have a lead supply pipe coming into the property but once in the property transitions to copper. The inspector recommended replacing the pipe or installing a water filtration system, then getting the water checked. The home was built in the 50's. Obviously replacing the pipe would be costly, has anyone else dealt with a similar issue? If so, how did you proceed? Thanks

Bruce
