suggestions on how to remove bathrrom towel holder from tile?

Here's a picture of my problem.  Any suggestions on how to remove the towel bar

Are you replacing it with a similar one ? if you will not be i would do as @Ricardo Meza said and carefully remove the grout, but be careful trying to break the tile out with just a chisel, any pressure against surrounding tiles will chip them. what i would do, is take a grinder with a diamond blade and carefully make some cuts, cutting out the towel bar holder and a couple cuts in that tile ( being careful not to hit other tiles), this will make release cuts so that the tile will remove easier with the chisel. the towel bar holder is cemented into the wall, when you get it out there will be a hole in the wall there.

Steven, as i said before, once you remove it, there will be hole behind it, you will need a towel holder that has a big enough plate on the back to cover the hole then. carefully chip the old holder into pieces with a hammer, you will not have to hit it hard, it will break apart, a chisel will help to remove pieces as well if the cement holding it gives you a tough time.

Qualification: I don't have a ton of experience, but I have done tile work in a bathroom, and cut through my own work to access plumbing.

That said...

I would imagine the holder isn't going to come off without damaging the surrounding tiles.  So, I'd cut the grout around the 4 tiles, break off with a chisel to the backer-board, and replace with new.  Hopefully you can find a close match.

Why not just replace the broken piece with a new one. They're still available.

to close the loop the remaining tiles had holes in them after removing the towel rack. I just ended up replacing them tiles.

and if you are picky about matching 100%, you can spray the tiles to match. but with white, you can never tell.
