Paneling solutions

I have a house with this paneling in most of the rooms. I understand that I could paint them. But is there any other solution to update them short of pulling them off the wall and rocking everything?

Cut em down a bit, put in a chair rail for a wainscoting setup, then drywall the upper half? I'm not super familiar with work on paneling but this could be an option. Not sure how expensive it'd be.
