Master carpenter: Crown molding
Hello BP,
I'm wondering if there is a master carpenter out there who is able to tell me: what are the miter angles for an outside and inside corners for 5 1/4 inch crown. I normally just use the corner boxes to save the headache but I'm hibernating for the winter and have a garage full of saws and boards so I thought I'd practice a bit. I deal with old homes that have paneled walls and so a topper is often needed. We don't have a bunch of carpenters to choose from in my area and I would be wasting their driving time for such a small task. Is there a formula for this cut assuming that the corner is somewhat aligned?

Google helped me but I can tell you what I found best for inside corners is coping the joint. This leads to a nice tight fit that last. Did my home office in stained oak and coped all inside corners and looked great and still does 14 years later. Outside corners I take an angle finder I got from home depot, get angle, make half and start messing around with scraps until I get it perfect. Sorry not much help, it is one of those things I can do, just not great at giving directions on how to do.
